  16. INTRODUCTION.
  17.  
  18. POSTER 3.5 is the latest version of the popular Windows shareware 
  19. program for making big posters, signs, and banners. Posters can be up to 
  20. 9 feet by 9 feet at 300 DPI, even bigger at lower resolutions.
  21. Poster combines the best features of word-processing,
  22. graphics, and desktop publishing with features especially tuned for 
  23. big posters and banners. This includes complete flexibility in the placement 
  24. of graphics, a full set of drawing tools and over 100 special effects 
  25. (like 3D, rotate, and arch) for text. All text and graphics are enlarged 
  26. and tiled over multiple pages. POSTER supports all True-Type and ATM 
  27. fonts, and imports graphics from BMP and WMF files, as well as from the 
  28. Clipboard and OLE applications. POSTER supports full color, and most 
  29. Windows-compatible printers.  Full support is there for non-standard 
  30. poster and paper sizes.

  32. POSTER is great for a wide variety of projects at work, school, home, or 
  33. clubs:
  34. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  35. 2. Creating large signs for advertisements, announcements, etc.
  36. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  37. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  40. INSTALLATION.
  41.  
  42. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  43. program.  
  44.  
  45. To install the program:
  46. 1. Create a temporary directory (like \TEMP) and unzip the POSTER35.ZIP
  47.    file to that directory.
  48. 2. Run SETUP from the temporary directory.
  49.    c:\TEMP\SETUP
  50.  
  51. The package consists of the following files:
  52. 1. This README file.
  53. 2. Example and tutorial files.
  54. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  55. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  56. 5. CTL3D.DLL, the 3d controls library.
  57. 6. Several BORDERx.WMF border files.  These can be imported using
  58.    the Page->Border->From File command.
  59.  
  60. NOTE: If not are installing this version of Poster ON TOP OF an 
  61. EXISTING version of poster, you can delete the old tutorial and
  62. example files, to save a little disk space.  To do this:
  63. delete c:\poster\tutor*.pos
  64. delete c:\poster\examp*.pos

  68. PRINTER DRIVER NOTES:
  69.  
  70. HP680C (and 682C):
  71. To print Continuous forms (banner paper) correctly, you MUST have 
  72. version 9 of the printer driver.  Version 8 does not properly handle
  73. characters that cross page boundaries in banner mode.
  74. When printing banners, be sure to set the Paper mode to Banner in 
  75. the printer setup dialog box.  Also, make sure the 'continuous forms'
  76. box is checked in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  77.  
  78. CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  79. Poster supports continuous forms on dot matrix and the HP680. Be 
  80. sure to check the continuous forms box in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  81. You may use continuous forms for posters or banners.  Using it for
  82. posters causes your poster to be printed in continuous strips, reducing
  83. the amount you have to paste together.
  84. PROBLEMS WITH PAGE EJECTS WITH CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  85. If your printer page ejects while trying to print continuous forms,
  86. you must adjust the page size.  EACH time you print:
  87. 1. Select File->Print.  Then select Continuous Forms.
  88. 2. Click on "More"
  89. 3. Adjust the field "Override Paper Size, Height" to a smaller value.
  90. 4. Select OK.
  91. 5. Select OK.
  92. You may have to adjust this field up or down to get Poster to go to the
  93. very edge of the current page, and then begin the next page at the very top of
  94. the next page.

  96. PROBLEMS WITH DROPPED CHARACTERS AT PAGE BOUNDARIES:
  97. If POSTER drops characters at page boundaries, try checking 
  98. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  99. printers (but not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  100. B" or "Method C".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  103. LASERJET III USERS.
  104. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  105. the following:
  106. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  107.    printer is set to 300 dpi.
  108. 2. If this doesn't work, or it is too slow for you, install and use the 
  109.    Laserjet II driver. 
  110.  
  111. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  112. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  113. follows:
  114. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  115. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  116.    time, and may hang the printer.)
  117. 3. Select "options". 
  118. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  119.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  120. 5. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  121. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  
  122.  
  123. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  124. POSTER cannot always automatically switch a postscript printer from 
  125. portrait mode to landscape mode.  If  "Print Preview" shows the printer 
  126. to be in the incorrect mode,use the "Print Setup" menu item to manually 
  127. select the proper mode.

  129. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  130. boundaries:
  131. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  132. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  133. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  134. 4. Close the control panel.
  135. 5. Start POSTER.
  136. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  137. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  138. work.

  140. SLOW PRINTING.
  141. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  142. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  143. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.

  168. Edit Picture lets you crop, lighten/darken, adjust contrast, and
  169. adjust color value of bitmap pictures (BMP, GIF, JPG).

  171.       Gradient color fills on rectangles and text.
  172.       Automatic borders on banners.
  173.       Cool text warps.
  174. 3.0c: Prevent problems when line width,color,or style is set on bitmaps

  186. Ruler, Grid,  and snap to grid for help in graphics placement.

  211. POSTER is shareware. If you try this program, find it useful, and 
  212. continue to use it, you are expected to register. The fee is only $16. 
  213. (plus $2 shipping, $4 overseas), which is really quite reasonable for
  214. a program like POSTER.

  216. Unregistered users are limited to printing 10 posters. When you register,
  217. you are entitled to unlimited support, future
  218. versions, and a free disk full of fancy borders.  You wil receive the 
  219. registration code immediately via email, which will remove the 10 poster
  220. limit. (Be sure to include your email address). To register:

  262. DEINSTALL  (REMOVING POSTER)
  263.  
  264. To remove POSTER from your system, do the following:
  265.  
  266. 1. Find the directory containing Poster.
  267. 2. Delete all files, using erase *.*.
  268.    Delete the file 'poster.ini' from your WINDOWS directory.
  269. 3. If you want to save the saved poster files, but remove the
  270.    program, then delete the files POSTER.EXE, POSTER.TXT, POSTER.HLP,
  271.    and CTL3D.DLL.
  272. 4. To remove the start icon:
  273.     Windows 3.1: In the program manager, highlight the Poster icon,
  274.         and then hit the DEL key.
  275.     Win95: Click on 'Start', then 'Settings', then 'Task Bar', then
  276.         'Start Text Menu', then 'Remove'.  Find the Poster entry,
  277.         highlight it, and then click on 'Remove'.

  281. USING POSTER.
  282.  
  283. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  284. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  285. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  286. typing to begin making your poster.

  288. The POSTER install program also associates *.POS files with POSTER.
  289. Double clicking on a POS file will 
  290. automatically start poster with that file.

  297. Users of POSTER must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  298. "POSTER is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  299. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,

  302. quential, which may result from the use of POSTER."

  304. POSTER is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  305. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  306. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  307. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  308. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  309. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  310. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  311. useful and find that you are using POSTER and continue to use
  312. POSTER after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
  313. istration payment of $16.  The registration fee will license one copy 
  314. for use on any one computer at any one time.  You must treat this 
  315. software just like a book.  An example is that this software may be used 
  316. by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
